Traditional workouts – also known as strength training – focuses on isolation of muscle groups with exercises like chest presses, leg press machines and dips to build up overall muscle strength.
Functional training, on the other hand, is a full-body training program that mimics real-life movements to develop holistic strength throughout your entire body. It improves your ability to lift and carry things, do simple tasks like moving furniture without causing back strain and even protect yourself in dangerous situations.
Movements are usually performed using more extensive equipment than traditional strength training, such as kettlebells, dumbbells, sandbags, bands, medicine balls, freeform boards, and other equipment to train your body as a whole unit rather than just the muscles that use a barbell or weight machine.
If you’re new to strength training, it’s recommended to start with light weights and low-resistance functional movements. Then, as you become more familiar with the exercises and learn how to perform them properly, you can add heavier weights and progress to higher reps.
